Patient-Centred Care in Pulmonary Fibrosis

Triple A model improves access, planning, and action in personalised pulmonary fibrosis care.

Published in Respiratory Research in November 2024, this narrative review presents a new model to improve personalised care for people living with pulmonary fibrosis. The authors introduce the “Triple A” framework—Access, Anticipate, and Act—as a way to address common gaps in care.

Access focuses on improving patients’ ability to reach diagnostic services, specialist teams, and emotional support earlier in their journey. Anticipate calls for proactive monitoring of symptoms, including planning ahead for oxygen therapy or lung transplant referrals. Act urges care providers to take timely, personalised steps like offering pulmonary rehabilitation or initiating palliative discussions before crisis points occur.

The article highlights the importance of holistic, multidisciplinary care involving respiratory specialists, community resources, and caregivers. It also explores barriers such as geographic distance, poor communication, and uneven access to antifibrotic treatment. The authors recommend that health systems adopt the Triple A model to provide more responsive, equitable support to PF patients.
